Ghar Sita Mutu, or “House with a Heart” in Nepali, is a home for abandoned children in Kathmandu, Nepal which also has literacy and vocational training programs for disadvantaged Nepali women.
Handmade felt is one of the most prominent traditional crafts of Nepal and making felt products is often a viable source of employment for women who have no formal education. But learning a craft while having no source of income is a large obstacle for most women, so at Ghar Sita Mutu, women are paid to learn the felting techniques. By empowering women with this viable skill, they are then often able to branch out on their own and make and sell felted products independently. Like Thailand and Cambodia, Nepal also has a devastating human trafficking problem, which disproportionally targets the daughters of uneducated (often lower-caste) women. By financially empowering mothers who are then more able to pay for their daughters to stay in school (and therefore dramatically reducing their risk of being trafficked) the women’s vocational training program plays a large role in the fight to combat sex slavery. Your purchase goes far beyond just a case for your laptop!
