Our mission is to prevent sex trafficking by empowering at-risk girls through education training programs and scholarships.
As many as 2 million children are forced into prostitution every year more than half of them live in Asia. Unlike a lot of problems in developing countries, this is one that is actually getting worse. At the peak of the transatlantic slave trade, 80,000 slaves were transported from Africa to the new world. Today, more than 10 times as many women are being forced into brothels or other forms of slavery. Every 30 seconds, another person becomes a victim. Women are lured by traffickers with false promises of low-skilled jobs such as domestic help, models, and other jobs, and are then forced to work as prostitutes. The good news is that our generation can end this horrible human rights violation and everyone has a role.
It’s important to shut down the perpetrators and save girls, but it’s equally important to prevent it from happening to girls at all. We believe that offering incentives for educating a girl will make its less likely for parents to sell their daughter into prostitution. We believe that teaching a girl about confidence, women’s rights and health can empower her against traffickers. We believe that with access to education she can pursue her dreams.
Daughters Rising works to:
Prevent sex trafficking and gender based violence
Promote and protect the rights of oppressed women and girls
Stop the cycle of of inter-generational poverty
Our programs include
Daughters Rising created R.I.S.E. workshops to teach real world computer skills, confidence, women’s rights and health in a supportive peer driven environment. The workshops are in locations defined by the U.N. as points of origin, transit and destination for persons trafficked for sexual exploitation. The workshops are completely free, and help us to identify candidates for scholarships. RISE workshops give families hope for a better future that starts with staying in school and results in more earning power and changing the fabric of their community. Learn more about RISE workshops.
INCREASING WOMEN EARNING
In 2011 Daughters Rising launched the RISE UP shop to help the mothers in impoverished rural villages to earn for their families. We buy handmade crafts at a fair price to sell online to a larger western audience and then invest 100% of the proceeds back into the next generation of young women. We connect and facilitate collaborations between indigenous craftswomen and artisans with designers to create unique jewelry and accessories. We are working towards developing sustainable models and increasing distribution.
Daughters Rising is currently developing projects and events to raise awareness and advocacy. We believe that by using the same tactics found in advertising, or the same story telling techniques in screenwriting, or the same emotional engagement in games — we will be able to reach and affect people in profound ways. We are meeting with artists, designers, copywriters, screenwriters, directors, animators, musicians and developers to create outstanding projects.
